Scotland’s most famous long-distance trail, the West Highland Way begins just outside Glasgow in Milngavie and winds north through lochs, moorland and highland glens before finishing in Fort William, at the foot of Ben Nevis — the highest mountain in the UK. At approximately 154 km / 96 miles, it’s typically walked over 6–8 days depending on pace and detours, combining well-waymarked paths with scenery that grows wilder and more dramatic with each stage.
To go beyond the map and into the trail’s true character, we’ve asked Anthony Barrett of Hillwalk Tours to share his first-hand insights.
Trail Highlights
“Leaving Drymen, the climb over Conic Hill offers a spectacular first taste of the Highlands, with panoramic views over Loch Lomond and the islands of the Highland Boundary Fault. The trail then follows the loch’s tranquil eastern shore, weaving through oak woods and along pebbled beaches. Beyond the loch, walkers cross the vast and haunting Rannoch Moor, one of Britain’s last great wildernesses, before descending into the dramatic scenery of Glencoe, framed by steep, glaciated mountains. The final miles bring sweeping views of Ben Nevis, and a celebratory finish in the lively outdoor town of Fort William.”
Practical Tips
- Book accommodation early — smaller villages like Inveroran and Kinlochleven fill quickly during peak season (May–September).
- Be prepared for midges — bring repellent or a head net if walking in summer (June–August).
Favourite Section
“The stretch from Inveroran to Kinlochleven captures the trail’s wild heart. It begins across lonely Rannoch Moor, passes the remote Kingshouse Hotel, and climbs the Devil’s Staircase, the highest point of the route. The views across Glencoe and the surrounding peaks are breathtaking, before a long descent leads to Kinlochleven’s wooded glen.”
Hidden Gems Along the Way
- Glengoyne Distillery (near Milngavie) — tour and taste one of Scotland’s most scenic single malts.
- The Clachan Inn (Drymen) — cosy and historic; Scotland’s oldest licensed pub.
- The Drovers Inn (Inverarnan) — eccentric, atmospheric, and full of Highland character.
- Ice Factor (Kinlochleven) — a unique indoor ice-climbing centre and café, perfect for rest or adventure.
